This information is provided in English for those who are interested in the programs and activities of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Iceland and especially for foreign students interested in studying philosophy in the Department. The Department is very active in international exchanges and receives a number of foreign students and professors annually. Most of these come to our Department from Europe through the ERASMUS or NORDPLUS schemes; but others have come, under various auspices, from North America and other parts of the world.

The Department offers both B.A.- and M.A.-level studies in philosophy. The principal language of instruction is Icelandic; but a number of courses are offered each year in English for the benefit of foreign students, and visiting professors most often teach in English. It is possible for a foreign student to study philosophy in English on a full-time basis.

The teaching staff consists of eight permanent members, supplemented by part-time teachers and student assistants. The undergraduate programs are designed to provide basic grounding in the history of Western philosophy and in the principal philosophical fields (ethics, epistemology, logic, metaphysics, political philosophy). Various issues in contemporary philosophy are also studied. Both the Continental and the Anglo-American philosophical traditions are represented.

The Department is active in philosophical research in a broad range of fields, and there are two philosophical research institutes associated with the Department.

Note: Although the information provided here and on the accompanying pages is in English, various names and titles appear in other European languages including French, German, Italian, Spanish, Danish, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian and, of course, Icelandic. Icelandic has two characters which may be unfamiliar: "þ", which is pronounced like the "th" in "three", and "ð", which is pronounced like the "th" in "there". Congratulations on your first Icelandic lesson!
