"To judge from the contents of engineering mathematics textbooks, one might expect an engineer's work to involve differential equations, multidimensional calculus and advanced linear algebra.

But in fact we found that a typical engineer does rather little mathematics
(and nearly all of it at the level of what is learnt in school), because the 'hard' mathematics is performed by computer software, and a small number of analytical specialists.

Does this mean that engineers don't need to know mathematics? No, but the kind of mathematical understanding required has changed. "

Publications on Mathematics in Work by the

Mathematical Sciences Group

Over a number of years, we have been carrying out a series of studies whose aim has been to

research the kinds of mathematical activities that professionals undertake in their working

lives. The studies have involved a range of practices: bank employees, aviation pilots, and

paediatric nurses. A new project for 2001 ("The Mathematical Components of Engineering

Expertise", funded by the ESRC) focuses on professional civil engineers. This work has

proved extremely fruitful for understanding how mathematical knowledge is used by experts

in professional domains, and has afforded an opportunity to develop a theoretical framework

for describing how mathematical knowledge is constructed more generally. It has also

allowed us to outline some provisional implications for new mathematical epistemologies and

pedagogies appropriate to the technological societies of the twenty-first century.
