I am an associate
professor at the Faculty
of
Economics
and Business Administration at the University
of Iceland.
I am married to
Hrafnhildur Stefánsdóttir and we have five children,
born in 1998, 2001 and 2003 and twins in 2007.
I was an undergraduate student at the University of Iceland in 1986-90 and then got my Ph.D. in economics from Yale in 1997. I have been with the University of Iceland since 1996. I was a researcher at the Institute of Economic Studies from 1996 until 1998 and an adjunct professor from 1997 until 1998, when I became an associate professor. I served as the Head of the Department of Business Administration (2000-2004) and as Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (2004-2007).
I have diverse research interests and have written on migration patterns, labour economics, micro- and macroeconomics, finance and game theory. I have also written two textbooks, one on introductory economics and one on portfolio theory. I wrote my dissertation on migration in Iceland. The methodology was based on recent developments in explaining how individuals and companies make decisions that involve non-refundable investments in a changing environment.
I taught
high-school students in 1988-90, undergraduates and
master's
students at Yale in 1992-95 and have taught at the University of
Iceland
since the fall of 1996. I mainly teach micro-economics and finance.
I have done
consulting work for several companies and institutions
in Iceland, mainly on competition and antitrust matters or
finance. I have also served on the boards of several companies or
institutions and at present I am the chair of Iceland's competition authority.
