Kormákr Ögmundarson (Icelandic, ca. 930-970): Lausavísa 59:5-8
[Skjald. A:I:90 - B:I:83]
FJÓRKENNT: lundr gnýsvells gáttar Gauts
FJÓRKENNT: "tree of roar-ice of doorway of Gautr" (warrior)
Gauts myndi ţá gáttar
gnýsvells, ef ţar fellak,
lunds, komk ljósu sprundi,
löngum minnzk, ór öngum.

ţá myndi löngum minnzk lunds gnýsvells gáttar Gauts, ef ek fellak ţar ; komk litlu sprundi ór öngum.

then would long be remembered the tree of roar-ice of doorway of Gautr, if I had perished there ; I saved the little woman from peril.

* Found in Kormáks saga [# 80].
* The mss. read gunnsvells, which doesn't make sense. Gný- and gunn- are commonly confused. Lunds is an emendation of lundr, which seems necessary for syntactic reasons.

gátt Gauts "doorway of Gautr" (shield)
gnýr gáttar Gauts "roar of shield" (battle)
gnýsvell gáttar Gauts "roar-ice of shield" (sword)
lundr gnýsvells gáttar Gauts "tree of sword" (warrior)
