This small faculty offers undergraduate training in dentistry for the
degree candidatus odontologiae, which is recognised as a dental qualification
throughout the European Economic Area. The course normally lasts six years and the first
term is devoted to chemistry, dental morphology and an introduction to anatomy and
physiology. At the end of the first term there is a competitive examination from which the
six students with the highest average mark are permitted to continue into the second term.
Although instruction is in Icelandic, the course texts are in English and examinations in
the first year may be written in English. Tuition in Icelandic is available in the
University and after the first year all instruction and examinations are in Icelandic.
Class sizes are small with normally only six students per teacher in the clinical courses,
which has ensured a very high standard of clinical training. The course fee is
approximately USD 350 per year (GBP 225).
The academic year is divided into two terms, September to December and
January to May. The last month in each term is largely devoted to examinations. Details of
the dental curriculum are given in the University of Iceland Course Catalogue. Further
information on the University of Iceland and instructions for aplicants can be obtained
from the Faculty Office or from the International Office of the University.
It is permitted to study for both a Masters and Doctoral degree in the Faculty of
Odontology but this is largely limited to pre- or para-clinical subjects. No organised
postgraduate courses in clinical subjects are yet available. Applications for postgraduate
training are dealt with on an individual basis and applicants should first make contact
with the Faculty Office at the address above.
